The Narrative Lectionary follows a four year cycle, and this year we move into the final year of the lectionary. Those of you who have used the Narrative Lectionary before will know that each year the lectionary focuses on a specific Gospel. This year the lectionary focuses on the Gospel of John.
As in the previous years, the lectionary starts in the Old Testament in September and builds towards the coming of Christ. After Christmas, the lectionary then works it way through John’s Gospel until Easter, before covering the story of the early Church as recorded in the book of Acts and the epistles. This allows the full sweep of Biblical history to be preached each year and to display the breadth and variety of voices within Scripture.
Each week we hope to offer a sermon resources to help you develop a sermon based on the lectionary. They are not meant to be either prescriptive or exhaustive and you may have other ideas on how to develop the text for preaching. Please feel free to adapt these resources according to congregational needs and individual styles, or to use your own approach to the lectionary text.
To help you plan and prepare, the full Year 4 schedule is available here.
